Kestrel and Kannaby ~Theriona

*KestrelShatterwind is holding a art contest, which starts Jan. 3rd and ends the 31st. For this, the submissions had to have the character Kestrel in her winter dress. It had to be winter outside, too (hence the "winter dress", I suppose

) unless of course you did an interior drawing.

but I digress.

Kestrel is the pretty dark felinavian to the right. The light one on the left is of my own design, based on Kestrel's species. I called her Kanna. The reference pics I used for Kestrel's design were as follows:

Aren't they pretty pictures? They were inspiring, to say the least. So many times I've slacked off, but lately I've been trying to push myself further to get more detail in the lineart, the shading, and the background. Look! A background! *silly pride* I know it isn't perfect... the transition from the close snow to the snow further in the background is a bit too abrupt, as is the transition from that snow to the mountains. Mountains which I had to draw, by the way

just because I liked how the mountains looked so much in the bg of KestrelShatterwind's drawings.

So what was the inspiration for this, exactly? Well, I suppose in all of her depictions of Kestrel, she's looking awesome, pensive, and intense. For some reason, I imagined what it would be like if she built a snowman. Hardly awesome, pensive, or intense. From that aspect, I went away from her true character. Maybe, when nobody else is looking, she sneaks off to help the nearby kids make snowmen and snowforts.

The colouring is amazing on this one as is the compostion I love the mountains in the background

I had fun wif the mountains

I decided that it was time I started drawing actual backgrounds for some of my pictures

although on some of the more recent ones, I've done more abstracty-artsy bgs. Yeah, I spent a long time cging this one. It was worth it, though!

The bigger story behind this would be for Kestrel... although it wouldn't me my story >_> ah well, you know what they say: coolnesse doth rest in healthy doses yea throughout the kingdomes hither and yon. Or something like that ^^

As for Kanna (yay, new character!!!), her storyline is that she's a snow fiend! Err... a cute li'l kid... *coughsamething*
